                   This is about the Hubble telescope. The 12000 - kilometer Hubble Space Telescope , was launched on 24 April 1990 by the American Space Shuttle Discovery. Now it orbits the earth once every 95 minutes from a distance of 600 kilometers. Two months after Hubble's launch scientists detected a serious flaw in the curving of its primary mirror. The defective mirror caused starlight to spread and produce fuzzy halos of light (ring of light blurred). In December 1993, the U.S National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) sent a repair team of astronauts on an 11-day mission in the Space Shuttle endeavour to correct the defect. The orbiting Hubble telescope was caught and fixed in position in the Shuttle's open cargo bay. four astronauts made a series of five wearisome spacewalks. They fixed and put in service new optics, solar panels , and other equipment on the Hubble telescope.
                    Among its important discoveries, Hubble telescope has found evidence of a large black hole in the center of the eliptical galaxy(band of star) - 45 million light - years away in the Virgo constellation(group of star). ( A light - year is the distance traveled by light in one year - about 9404,800000000 kilometers). This provides strong support for the existence of gravitationaly collapsed objects which were foretold 80 years ago by Albert Einstein in his general theory of relativity. It provided the most detailed images of the spectacular impacts of comet Shoemaker - Levy 9 with Jupiter, in July 1994. The images, taken in red light, showed the comets train of 21 icy fragments streched across 1.1 million kilometers of space.It sent back the first images ever seen of large - scale surface features on Saturn's giant moon - Titan. It helped astronomers confirm the existence of oxygen in the atmosphere of Europa - satellite of Jupiter. It observed great pancake shaped discs of dust - raw materials for formation of a planet - swirling around half of the stars in the Orion Nebula ( a region, 1500 light - years away from earth where new stars are born ). Scientist at NASA say that the resolution from Hubble telescope is now so good that it can detect from a distance of 10000 kilometers two fireflies placed ten feet apart. They hope its discoveries will make more clear the origin and the final destiny of all created things together with the earth and the heavenly bodies.
